Kitron – a leading Scandinavian EMS company – is proud to apply its knowledge, experience and skills in electronics manufacturing to support a wide range of companies worldwide that drive technological progress and practical innovation forward, aiming to excel at advancing human safety and comfort. However, Kitron is a partner not only to companies that master services tailored to people and their lifecycles, but also to companies with a remarkably noble cause – protecting and preserving wildlife.
Savannah Tracking Ltd., with the founder and managing director at the forefront, Dr Henrik Rasmussen, is a Kenyan company providing advanced and reliable tracking solutions and devices to support global animal preservation efforts, and Kitron is proud to contribute its expertise and services in tracking-chip device manufacturing.
Impact That Lasts
Savannah Tracking develops affordable, customised animal-tracking systems for wildlife management, conservation and research. Its core product range includes collars for Asian, African, and forest elephants, designed in varying sizes and weights with the largest ones weighing up to 16 kilograms. The company also offers standard neck collars equipped with GPS, GSM, and Iridium connectivity, as well as specialised bird tags and tailored tracking solutions for other mammals. In addition, Savannah Tracking provides geofencing solutions that enable real-time monitoring of animal movements and trigger alerts when wildlife crosses predefined boundaries, supporting proactive conservation and conflict mitigation efforts.
In wildlife conservation, tracking plays a critical role not only in protecting animal populations from natural and human-induced threats – such as poaching, hunting, and illegal wildlife exploitation – but also in mitigating human-wildlife conflict. For example, it helps reduce livestock losses caused by predators such as lions and leopards. Savannah Tracking's LionShield system detects approaching animals and triggers visual, audible, and other deterrents to safely manage potential conflicts between humans and wildlife.
Across the Ecosystem
Based in Kenya, Savannah Tracking contributes to the broader conservation ecosystem by supporting technologies used in research, monitoring, and protection initiatives that are vital to regional wildlife preservation. For instance, according to the Mara Elephant Project's Q1 2025 Research & Tracking Report, a large bull elephant named Lempiris – originally collared in 2017 – was recently fitted with a new Savannah Tracking collar and will be monitored for a further three years. Data collected from such monitoring enables patrol teams to identify and respond to human-elephant conflict (HEC) hotspots in nearby conservancies.
Savannah Tracking's GPS collars are also used in scientific research by organisations such as the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, and the United Asia Group Foundation. These initiatives include studying wildebeest movement across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, as well as other conservation efforts.
It's important to remember that such examples represent only a fraction of the work being done to advance human-wildlife coexistence and ensure safety for human communities and wildlife.

Sharing a Focus on Technology and Innovation
Kitron and Savannah Tracking share a common purpose – to stay at the forefront of technological innovation. Kitron provides tracking devices with a micro-GPS component, commonly known as a tracking chip, which is an essential element in the Savannah Tracking products. Since 2021, Kitron has been manufacturing the tracking devices for Savannah Tracking, which continues to champion wildlife tracking systems in the regions where it operates. Four main product categories include the electronics that make tracking tailorable, accessible, and efficient.
One of the prime examples of how our partnerships are embedded with innovation is the implementation of the tracking chip solutions for electronic devices that need to sustain harsh and challenging environments, extreme temperature changes, the impact of dust and rough terrain. Kitron's engineers apply decades of EMS experience to create products that withstand the climate, human and animal handling, and other relevant factors.
Stronger Together
We are proud to partner with companies driven by the same visionary thinking through the lens of innovation, and Savannah Tracking is a magnificent example of how highly motivated businesses are moving our planet forward. This partnership is not just about technology – it's about making a lasting impact on the future of wildlife preservation and conservatorship.
It represents a powerful fusion of reliable electronics and wildlife technology, helping researchers and wildlife professionals monitor and protect endangered species as efficiently as possible. It takes the same dedication and perseverance to drive continuous innovation, and although our companies differ in their specialisations, our shared values and complementary expertise are what bring us together and make this partnership stronger.
